Surf Coast Century 2014 – Oscars 100 v The Teams

Think you have what it takes to beat the guys at Oscars100 (probably not as hard as our misguided confidence would like to think), well now is your opportunity to prove it!
Imagine running at the foot of some of Australia’s tallest coastal cliffs, while the low tide of the Southern Ocean laps the sand at your feet. Ahead lies a magical 100km trail run journey along Victoria’s wild surf coast and wildflower hinterland.
Welcome to the Surf Coast Century!

This is a unique run with a promise that no two steps will be the same… and we welcome you to be part of it in 2014 as fully fledged members of Team Oscars100.

For weeks now we’ve tired you all with our stories of ultimate endurance and courage in our successful conquest of the dreaded North Face 100, possibly the world’s toughest endurance event of all time……. OK maybe not the hardest but it was pretty difficult…….. OK it was a challenge……..
Well for those of you out there who have had a gutful of our gloating and self-praise, this is your chance to launch yourself into our stratosphere. Oscars100 V’s The Teams will be a race to determine once and for all whether the guys at Oscars100 have overinflated their athletic capabilities or (more than likely the case) completely unplay their levels of awesomeness.
Best of all, and for a purpose higher than our gloating, participants will use their new found levels of awesomeness to assist us in raising funds, as all funds raised go directly back to Oscars100, to allow us to continue funding early intervention programs while increasing the awareness of Autism in Australia.


How it will work

100km Competitors – For the hardcore, the salts of the earth, the all round legend. The kind of person you would take home to meet your parents. Your Mum would love them, your dad maybe not so much. In short,  Andrew and Andy will be back again for another 100km event in order to raise their awesomeness meter just a little higher. 100km virgins Matt Welch, Belle Campbell and Michelle Flanagan have bravely chosen this as his first Ultra-Marathon event and we will be there right along side them just to ensure their ego’s are kept in check…….. OK already they will be making sure our egos are kept in check. Admittedly Matt was taken advantage of while in a slightly inebriated state and Belle has been worn down over a period of 10 months with relentless begging, grovelling and pleading from the two Andrews. Michelle, all if took was the promise of beer, wine and spirits delivered from a drinking hat at the finish line and she was in. All are complete legends and are welcome additions to the awesomeness stratosphere.

50km Competitors – The 50km runner will complete half of the course and in doing so become an official Ultra Marathon athlete. Not for the faint hearted but perfect for those who are looking to run a 100km race in the future.

Oscars100 Teams The SCC Relay teams will be made up of four people with each competing in a different leg of the race:

Leg 01: is along the beach from Angelsea to Torquay through the inter tidal zone the whole way with some technical terrain over reefs and rocks. It is basically flat from start to finish. (21km)
Leg 02: is a mixture of gravel footpaths and narrow single track through the bush. Whilst not exactly hilly, this section is best described as undulating. (28km)
Leg 03: is mixture of 2WD, 4WD and single tracks through more remote sections of the coastal bushland (with extensive wildflowers all around). This is the hilliest leg of the race and the crux of the course. (28km)
Leg 04: is for the show boaters, the glory hounds. While everyone has done the hard yards they soak up the victory through the finishers shoot like they have done the whole thing themselves………. Um, sorry, I mean this leg is another mixture of 2WD, 4WD tracks and single track that returns you to the beach for a stint along the sand to the finish. This has a hilly start but a flat finish. At this point we have 6 teams taking on the 100km runners. These legends are a mixture of experienced marathoners, fun runners, footballers and total novices but they all have one single very important quality that elevates them to legendary status. They all worship Andrew and Andy………. No seriously they d…….. OK they don’t but they are all legends because they are all generously donating their time and effort to our cause. A central element to what we do here at Oscars100 is raise funds to assist in making expensive early intervention programs more accessible for families. For many of you this will be the first time that you have either attempted to run 20+km or run in a trail event. Through your journey you will find that what you are doing will inspire many people and they will want to know how they can help. To assist you with this we have set up each Team competing in Oscars100 V’s The Teams their own donations page at (These pages will be emailed to all entrants once the teams have been finalised) to assist you in fundraising for Oscars100.

Through inspiring others with your adventurous feats, each Team will assist us in reaching our fundraising goal of $10,000 for this event. Every dollar that is raised is donated to an organisation that assists the Autistic community and their families.

To assist you in raising funds we will have an award for the Team that raises the most funds. This will include your entry fee refunded, courtesy of Oscars100 in recognition of your efforts, amongst other prizes. Total prize package for the winning team will be to the value of $1000. We will also have have a special momento for all teams as a thank you for assisting us and helping us reach our goals.

We still have some teams available and position within existing teams. Entries for this event will close on the 30th June 2014 so don’t miss out.

The cost to participate in this event is as follows: (this entry fee is charged Surf Coast Century race organisers Rapid Ascent)
Individuals: (100KM)
• $293 if you enter between 5:00pm May 2nd and 5:00pm Friday August 29th
Individuals: (50KM)
• $210 if you enter between 5:00pm May 2nd and 5:00pm Friday August 29th
4 person relay teams: (100KM)
• $414 if you enter between 5:00pm May 2nd and 5:00pm Friday August 29th ($103.50 each)

Once we have finalised all teams we will email all competitors the details on how to pay for the entry in this event.

SCC entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this race but there is some compulsory gears requirements that all competitors need to have:
•    Your race number plate. This must be worn on your front, attached to the outermost garment at all times. (Our suggested way of wearing this is on a thin, elastic piece of cord or a triathlon band, as this will allow you to easily have it on the outside no matter what you are wearing without having to fiddle with safety pins.
•    First Aid Kit (minimum contents 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular bandage, 2 x non stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves) (For Sale at Race Registration, $15ea)
•    Space blanket (For Sale at Race Registration, $7ea)
•    A whistle (For Sale at Race Registration, $5ea)
•    Mobile phone (Telstra Next G recommended)
•    1 x windproof jacket – Goretex or similar waterproof / breathable fabric strongly recommended
•    Water container minimum 750ml capacity (may be a water bottle or bladder in a backpack)
•    A copy of the topographical map given out at registration (also available to download from the event website). Recommended to be in a waterproof bag – zip lock OK.
•    Long sleeve thermal top – Polypropylene, wool or similar thermal fabric – not cotton, lycra or any ‘compressions’ garments. Weather permitting**
** This item will be confirmed as mandatory if the weather is going to be cold, wet and/or windy. Competitors will be advised if this is mandatory at the race briefing on Friday night and on the event website (although we strongly encourage you to carry it either way).

Team member can pass their gear from one competitor to next at the checkpoint or you can all buy your own gear. If you are having any problems getting this gear let us know and we can give you a few suggestions or co-ordinate the swap over of gear with other competitors.
